HDR

— laptops with displays that support HDR technology.

This technology is designed to expand the range of brightness reproduced by the laptop screen; Simply put, an HDR screen will display brighter whites and darker blacks than regular matrix. In fact, this can significantly improve image quality. First, the expansion of the dynamic range contributes to the brightness and fidelity of colours on the screen; secondly, the visibility of details in very bright or very dark areas of the frame is preserved (whereas on normal screen such details often “sink” in solid white or black). Of course, HDR content will also be required to take advantage of all these benefits.

It's worth noting that several HDR technologies are in use these days — most notably the earliest and most common HDR10, the enhanced HDR10+ (both 10-bit), and professional Dolby Vision (12-bit). Technically, the first two standards are compatible with each other (with quality limit at the HDR10 level), but are incompatible with the third. Modern laptops with HDR are almost guaranteed to have either HDR10 or HDR10+; and support for Dolby Vision, if provided, is usually in addition to one of these standards.
